About Ian

Ian Ellingham, BArch, MBA, MPhil, PhD, PLE, FRAIC

Dr.Ellingham's career started in development management.  He was responsible for the creation of numerous projects, including seventeen social housing and care projects using funding through government programmes, as well as others built using more entrepreneurial methods, or arrangements with entrepreneurial developers.  Other projects have included the creation or refurbishing of office, industrial and retail buildings.

More recently, he has increased his work in research, writing and teaching, with an emphasis on two areas, one being decision-making in the built environment, in particular the application of real option pricing methods, and the other being the measurement and understanding of human response to buildings and urban spaces.  Research projects have been funded by the governments of Canada, Ontario, the United Kingdom and Europe, as well as numbers of entrepreneurial and non-profit organisations.  Some of this work has been done through Cambridge Architectural Research Limited, a British research and consulting organisation, of which he is an associate and part-owner.  He also is an instructor at 'The School of Restoration Arts' in Queenston, Canada, where he has taught a variety of subjects relating to heritage architecture.

His educational background includes a Bachelor of Architecture from Carleton University in Ottawa, an MBA from the University of Western Ontario, and a Master of Philosophy in Land Economy and a PhD in Architectural and Urban Studies from the University of Cambridge.  He is a Fellow of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada, and is qualified as an architect and land economist in Ontario.  He has been extensively published both in academic and practitioner journals, lectured in universities and many other settings, and, for over a decade, was the chair of the Canadian architectural journal OAA Perspectives.
